playing with repetition some more. using strips of bicycle tire tubes printed on muslin. i like the way the stray threads printed an image, too. can't wait to stitch these!

baltimore's kinetic sculpture race

a rite of spring every year here in baltimore is the kinetic sculpture race. this year i had the prestigious job of judging the sock creatures on each vehicle. here i am in all my sock creature regalia. and here are some photos of the fabo sock creatures that were competing. great day!

stitched bicycle tubes

playing around with some cut up strips of bicycle tubes. this idea of stitching together recycled materials really has me thinking!

by the way, the bicycle tubes are courtesy of bike the big apple tours.

bad buddy in brooklyn

bad buddy's adventure began with traveling on the airline of homer simpson. the benefits of this kind of travel are that you have time to meet lots of nice people and you get to spend more hours in the terminal and on the runway, than you spend in the air. for those who don't like to fly, this airline allows you to spend lots of time on the ground. and bad buddy scored a free button with homer's image on it!

so bad buddy got a personal tour on a tandem bicycle with a very cute guide from bike the big apple. she then went to the socrates sculpture park in long island city queens/astoria and saw takashi horasaki's 'social dress new orleans' a re-creation of destroyed homes from katrina. she also enjoyed james johnson's sculpture 'freedom of movement' and flux factory's 'albatross'. she made a few new friends along the way, went to moma's p.s.1 and then back to waiting on the tarmac before returning home. a great trip indeed!

a quilted diary block

back in the day when i was making weekly diary blocks, i made this one for my son, who was working as a bike messenger in nyc. there had been a big power blackout in the northeastern usa that summer and this block was my tribute to his adventures during the blackout. it says 'mercury meets the ne (northeast) power grid.' this was one of my first experimentations with mixed media - stuff i had found on the ground. the background of the block is painted - my first time doing that, too. guess i was feeling adventurous. it's still hanging in his apartment, so i took these photos while i was visiting this week.

embroidered shirt

there is nothing more comfy to wear everyday than a well-worn baggy oxford shirt. but sometimes they can be so boring. embroidery - a way to solve the mundane! could be good for the whole world. oh, and i also like to replace white buttons with any other color that doesn't match.
